'Machines' evolved from one of the very first pieces of music I ever wrote when I got my 4-track back in 1989. I didn't even have a drum machine yet and used a cheap keyboard with those shitty built-in drums.
The original version of Machines had an instrumental at the beginning. When I first began to re-record this back in 2003, I decided to split off the intro as its own song called 'Machine'. Check out 'Machine'

'Machines' is basically a love song. Well, about as much as a love song that I can write. The woman is in the hospital in a coma and the lyrics tell the story of what the man is feeling and why he decides to end her life.

Day after day
I watch as your life melts away
Dissolving before my eyes
And all I can do for you is cry

Night after night
I watch in vain as you try and fight
And I’ll pray for you my dear
Because your time for death is coming near
Tonight

I sit alone by your bed
The doctors tell me that you aren’t dead
The only sign of life I see
Your dancing heart on the machinery

Sometimes life is so unfair
They say there’s thought in your empty stare
If you were awake I know what you would say
Don’t let me exist this way

I wish I could turn of the machines
But I just don’t have the means
There’s only one thing left I can do
Believe me dear that I love you

Here I stand alone in the night
Screaming for your life
Here I stand your bloods on my hands
They’ll never understand

I know that you never dreamed
Kept alive my machines
I set you free from misery
Oh please God forgive me
