'By Trying...' is a story about a man and his need to control a woman. But no matter how much you try to keep someone secluded and hidden from the real world, it will always find a crack and creep in.

The story of this song originated from a real-life situation. A girl I knew from high school had gotten married to a very controling man and would barely let her out of his sight. But, he was very ignornat about computers and the internet, so that was the way the real world was able to creep in.

I kept you in the dark so you couldn't grow
There were so many things I didn't want your young mind to know
So I brought you inside and I closed the door
And in doing so I only hurt you more

I tried to keep you hidden from all the things that I knew would hurt you
I tried to keep you secluded from all the world's evils that I knew
But the outside always has its way of creeping in
I couldn't keep you protected from this evil world of sin

By trying to control you, I only lost control
By trying to own you, I only lost your soul
By trying to perfect you, you became my obsession
By trying to love you, I lost my prized possession

You had so many questions, such a young and inquisitive mind
You wanted to explore, but I tried my damnedest to keep you confined
My explanations were thin and you began to see right through
And it became apparent I couldn't keep the truth from you
